But as their work pushes the boundaries of what clothing can do, it also exposes a deeper environmental paradox — one that becomes especially clear when examining garments like the Garbage Sweater, made from old firefighter suits and bulletproof vests.


Vollebak’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that clothing should be engineered for the next century rather than the next season. Their garments often read like survival tools for a world in flux, offering protection, resilience, and a sense of psychological armour. This approach positions them as futurists rather than fashion designers. They are building for a world where the climate is unpredictable, where materials must endure extremes, and where clothing becomes a form of personal infrastructure.


Yet the environmental story is far more complicated. Many of the materials Vollebak uses are extraordinarily durable but also extraordinarily difficult to recycle. Ceramic-coated textiles resist abrasion and heat but cannot be easily disassembled. Graphene production is energy-intensive. Copper-infused fabrics raise questions about mining, toxicity, and micro-shedding. These garments are built to last, but longevity alone does not guarantee sustainability when the materials themselves resist circularity. Vollebak’s catalogue is split between garments designed to biodegrade in soil and garments engineered to survive geological time. This duality raises a fundamental question: what does sustainability mean when a brand is simultaneously designing for decomposition and for permanence?


The Garbage Sweater embodies this tension more clearly than any other piece. It is made from shredded firefighter suits and bulletproof vests — materials engineered for extreme protection, not environmental neutrality. Firefighter suits often contain PFAS, the so‑called “forever chemicals” used to resist flame, water, and chemical exposure. These substances do not break down in the environment and accumulate in soil, water, and human bodies. Upcycling does not remove PFAS; it simply relocates them. When these suits are shredded and respun into a sweater, the chemical load remains embedded in the fibres. The garment may be imaginative, but the toxicology is unchanged.


Bulletproof vests introduce another layer of complexity. They are typically made from aramid fibres such as Kevlar, or from ultra‑high‑molecular‑weight polyethylene, often bound with resin coatings. These materials are chemically stable, resistant to heat and abrasion, and extremely difficult to recycle. They can shed microfibres, contain residual solvents from production, and cannot biodegrade. Upcycling them into knitwear does not neutralise these properties. It simply transforms a protective composite into a domestic textile, raising questions about exposure, washing, and end‑of‑life disposal.


This is the environmental paradox at the heart of Vollebak’s most experimental work. Upcycling hazardous materials diverts them from landfill, but it also reintroduces them into everyday life. The environmental burden is displaced rather than eliminated. Without transparency about PFAS levels, microfibre shedding, chemical residues, or end‑of‑life pathways, the Garbage Sweater remains an experiment rather than a fully responsible material solution. It is a powerful piece of storytelling, but it sits in a grey zone where creativity outpaces toxicology.


Vollebak’s more regenerative projects tell a different story. Their Plant and Algae T‑Shirt, designed to biodegrade in soil within months, demonstrates a genuine commitment to exploring low‑impact materials. Their Carbon Fibre T‑Shirt repurposes aerospace waste. Their Garbage Sweater, despite its chemical complications, attempts to confront the problem of industrial waste head‑on. These projects show that Vollebak is not simply chasing novelty; they are probing the edges of what sustainable innovation could look like. But the brand’s work remains split between two incompatible futures: one where clothing returns to the earth, and one where clothing is engineered to outlive the wearer.


Accessibility adds another dimension. Vollebak’s garments are expensive, often prohibitively so. Their innovations are not designed for mass adoption but for a niche audience of early adopters, technologists, and collectors. This means the benefits of their material experimentation are not evenly distributed. The brand influences imagination more than infrastructure. They shape the cultural conversation around extreme materials, but they do not yet transform the mainstream supply chain.


Still, Vollebak plays a vital role in the future of apparel. They treat clothing as a site of scientific inquiry, pushing the industry to confront questions about durability, protection, and the psychological dimensions of climate resilience. They remind us that clothing is not just aesthetic; it is technological, environmental, and existential. Their work forces the fashion world to imagine garments not as seasonal commodities but as tools for survival, adaptation, and storytelling.


The challenge ahead is alignment. For Vollebak’s innovations to contribute meaningfully to a regenerative future, the company will need to reconcile its extremes: the garments built to return to the soil and the garments built to survive the apocalypse. They will need to address the recyclability of their most advanced materials, the toxicology of upcycled protective gear, the sourcing of metals and minerals, and the long-term environmental footprint of garments designed for permanence. They will also need to consider how innovation can be shared, scaled, or licensed so that the benefits extend beyond a small, privileged audience.


Vollebak is designing the wardrobe of the future, but the future they design for will depend on the choices they make now. Their work shows that innovation is not inherently sustainable. It becomes sustainable only when the systems around it — sourcing, chemistry, production, end-of-life, accessibility — are built with the same imagination as the garments themselves.
